If you’ve ever had a dead tree in your yard, you know how annoying they can be. First off, they usually look terrible. Second, you have to hire tree trimmers to get the thing down. After they are done, then you just have a pile of wood just sitting there. If you have a fire pit it’s awesome, you have all the wood you need for quite some time. If you don’t though, it’s just a pile of wood without any use. So when this crafter saw a big tree stump just sitting there with no use, he got a little creative and made something epic! Check out what he made below.
The Instructables user arron_mollet22 recently found the trunk of a huge Manford tree.
He took the opportunity to slice a piece off for a project he wanted to do.
He took a planer to the piece of wood to remove any imperfections for a beautiful hand made clock. He then marked out where the clock hands would be placed, and even added a temperature gauge to the smaller piece on the side.
He used a CNC router to engrave the numbers and words into the wood. He added an aluminum inlay for the numbers and dashes for a better look.
He went to the store and bought a simple clock with no regard for how it looked. The mechanical parts are the only things he needed from it.
After disassembling the clock he bought, it was time to install the new mechanics to the back.
These are the motors that control the movement of the hands. He placed the motor in a hole he drilled in the back.
This is the hole that he created to house the mechanics.
He sanded the face and stained it to complete the project.
I’ve always wanted a clock like this.
Now that I know how easy these things are to make, I’m going to try one this summer. I have plenty of scrap wood available to me, so finding a piece that’s suitable shouldn’t be a problem. These type of clocks add a nice rugged feel to any home. It is a good way to tie nature into any setting.
