Zlatan Ibrahimović plays for the Paris Saint-Germain soccer club and is no stranger to the spotlight. On February 14, 2015, after scoring his first goal of the game, he followed through on a premeditated publicity stunt that resulted in a yellow card and a suspension from the next game due to yellow card accumulation. Although this could easily jeopardize the teams standings, Zlatan Ibrahimović says it was totally worth it. For most sports heroes, their record and final standings are the only thing that’s important, but Zlatan had something else on his mind.
With the help of Forsman & Bodenfors advertising agency and The World Food Programme, a plan was devised to turn the world’s spotlight from Zlatan, towards the people that need it the most. Zlatan used social media to hint towards what was coming.
On his Facebook page, he posted this picture and stated, “A very important name for me.”
What a great way to get his 21.5 million Facebook followers to start talking about this tattoo. Then when they watched the game and saw his hands and arms with new tattoos, their curiosity was heightened. After his goal, was the great reveal. Off came the jersey and for the whole world to see… 50 names of people Zlatan’s never met.
These 50 names are actual people, a very small percentage of the 805 MILLION NAMES of people suffering from hunger in the world today. In the video, Zlatan Ibrahimović says, “I have supporters all over the world. Beginning today, I want the support to go to the people who really need it. So whenever you hear my name, you will think of their names. Whenever you see me, you will see them.”
Zlatan Ibrahimović wrote ‘805 MILLION NAMES’ on his soccer cleats for this match to make sure the world knows that 805 million people are suffering from hunger.
Hopefully Zlatan continues his support of this campaign. This is a great step in the right direction of acknowledging and alleviating world hunger. Furthermore, an especially large step towards the restoration of my faith in the humanity of sports figures to do what’s right.
