With school consuming most of his time and money it was tough to come up with a worthy birthday gift for his brother. His brother had always spoiled him on his birthday so this year he vowed to make it up to him. He saw a clock in a magazine that was very ornate, unique and beautiful. He looked at the price tag and saw that it was $1500. That was way out of reach for his price range so he decided to make his own. Luckily he is very handy and talented with these kinds of things because this project is incredible! The detail involved in this build is amazing. He also hid a little birthday message that will light up only on his brother’s birthday. I’d say this is a DIY project for the pros. Take a look at this DIY word clock!
He had to find the perfect woods to work with and chose walnut.
The first part of the casing was to lay out all of the letters in a perfect pattern. Once he had a template he sent it off to be laser cut for perfection.
Next he had to align the LED’s to display the correct time as well as the birthday message. This also required a perfect template.
He used a laser guided drill press to make holes that would hold LED’s perfectly aligned so they were all uniform after installation. This was a very tedious task.
The open spaces are where the colorful birthday LED’s will go.
And now the wiring and soldering. He had to solder each light together with a power capacitor. Again very tedious and had to be perfect.
After he had all the capacitors soldered on.
Now that the Led’s were installed in the DIY word clock, he came up with a wiring diagram that will control all the clocks functions in order to display the time properly.
I’m not even going to try to explain in detail what this does but it more or less tells the LED’s what to do and when to do it. He needed a total of 3 to control all the functions and they required a lot of wiring and testing.
A lot of wiring. He could have wired up a big circuit board that would have included all of this but he thought these individual pieces would add to the charm of the word clock.
